In September 2011, the Oberursel City in western Germany will have the Fryderyk Chopin Square. On March 1, the news was announced by Mr. Hans Georg Brum, the mayor of the city, at a gala concert dedicated to the composer.
The concert with its traditional name "Chopiniada" took place under the patronage of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Berlin, Marek Prawda. Ilse Schwarz-Schiller, the President of the local Chopin Society, welcomed the guests. Jakub Wawrzyniak, the Consul thanked the organizers and the present at the concert representatives of the Chopin Societies in Darmstadt and in Worms for their commitment to celebrations of the Chopin Year.
Janusz Olejniczak was the special guest. His performance received several-minutes long ovation. The artist performed compositions by Fryderyk Chopin, Karol Szymanowski and Claude Debussy.
Apart from local political and cultural representatives, special guests were present at the concert: the mentioned Hans Georg Brum, mayor of the Oberursel city, Toyoei Shigeeda, Consul General of Japan in the Frankfurt am Main, professor Maciej Łukaszczyk, president of the Chopin Society in Germany, and Klaus Sturmfels, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Hesse. After the official part, a meeting with the pianist, honorary guests, organizers and sponsors of the concert took place.
The Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland awarded the mayor of the Oberursel city the distinction "For Merits to Culture of Poland" (pl. "Zasłużony dla Kultury Polskiej") The ceremony of awarding the distinction will take place in September 2011 in Oberursel, at the opening of the "Fryderyk Chopin Square" in the city.
